Special Edition

We sent Big Dog to The Rainbow Bridge at 12:25 pm Central Standard Time.
RIP Bandit 1994 - 2009

Kia, our wonderful dog of about 4 years got cancer and we had to send her to The Rainbow Bridge also. A couple of days after that we stopped at the SPCA in Edmonton and went to see the dogs, as we walked down the aisle a scrawny mutt came bounding at the bars with his eyes shining, a great big smile on his face and said to us “it’s about time you came to get me, I’ve been waiting for you”. He had been at the SPCA way too long, he should have been put down weeks ago, but the staff loved him so much that they kept putting it off and putting it off and putting it off until we got there. He probably only weighed 30 pounds; a pathetic looking tail and maybe a foot high and he was 2 years old according to the SPCA. Ross fell in love with him on the spot. There was a Samoyed in the next stall, I wanted him, but oh no, it had to be this one. July 1996

We brought him home and he fitted in like he had always been with us. Lexi was not even two and he loved her. It was really weird; every time he ate he seemed to get bigger! I kept telling Ross that he was getting to be a very big dog and we only had a very small house. Just after we got him Ross had to leave for 5 days to go up north for his job, so Bandit and I (Ross always wanted a dog named Bandit so that’s what we called him) kinda bonded and he (even in a week) got bigger and bigger. When Ross got home Bandit growled at him and wouldn’t let him go near his food. I smacked him and told him this was his daddy so behave! It was ok after that. Ross and Bandit bonded so much that they were inseparable, Bandit stayed by Ross’s side like glue!

By the time Big Dog finished growing in our house, (remember he was two when we got him so he should have been full grown) his tail had filled out and was fairly long (when he was happy, which was most of the time, he would wag his tail and wipe off the coffee table with it) and he weighed about 105 lbs.

He had a great life. Every summer and some winters we went to the lake for the weekend and he would play. In the summer when he was hot he would walk down the stairs to the lake and walk in about ankle deep and lay down to cool off, he never did go swimming. When he was thirsty he would take a couple of laps of water from the lake. He had 10 acres of treed land to explore with his brothers and/or sisters chasing bugs, and anything else he could find. He was always a very laid back dog, so he mostly laid on the front lawn and had a snooze in the sunshine. He used to keep all his balls under the cabin, bringing only one out at a time to play with then when he was done he would take it back under the cabin where it belonged. When we sold the lake property he knew it was the last time he would be there so he went under the cabin and got his favorite ball to bring home. That ball was beside him when he left us today along with his favorite rope he would love to play with.

We had so much fun in his life, he loved to ride in our motor boat on the lake and he would sit at the stern of the boat half on the seat and half on the side of the boat so his tail used to drag in the water. He got to play on the beach on Vancouver Island a couple of times and he played at the beach here. It’s funny, the first time he saw the ocean he waded in and was quite surprised that it moved, the lake didn’t move? He took a lap of water and the look on his face was priceless! He looked at me and said “what the hell, why does it taste funny, it doesn’t taste like the lake? He loved to travel in the motor home lying between us. He laid right beside Ross’s drums every time he played, it didn’t matter how loud it got. He sure loves his daddy!

He was very hot when we first arrived in Mexico, but he seemed to get used to it, but never to the ocean, I think it scared him. He started having a hard time walking about 3 months ago, just like his daddy an mommy sometimes (you know when you first get up from sitting along time, your knees don’t want to work well). I think he had a small stroke too as he kept leaning to his right side when he walked. We went to the vet and he gave us some pills, squish 1 and add 3 syringes of water and a little sugar and give him one syringe a day. Wow, what a difference, he would get up and walk around, he went out to go pee and would walk around the block with Ross and Gracie. Then slowly it didn’t seem to work anymore and he was having a hard time getting up. Ross would lift his back end up until he got his sea legs then he could sometimes go out to go pee on his own or Ross would hold his back end up. He had a couple of accidents in the bedroom. One was this morning, before the vet came.

We posted on our blogs that we had a beloved pet and needed him to be put to sleep and we needed a sympathetic vet to come to help us. 4 people recommended Dr. Sabuesos, including some very good friends of ours. We called him up and he had no problems driving to Bucerias (his office and he lives in PV) to help us out. He came at noon our time and was such a kind a caring man. He explained to us what would happen and why and said he will go as slow as we want him to. He first gave Bandit an injection to calm him down; all the while the vet was listening to his heart to make sure everything was ok. He injected the first of three shots, slowly putting him to sleep, then a deep sleep then putting him out of his pain. He put his back side in a garbage bag just in case his bowels gave way on the way to PV.

You will not believe how our higher power has taken over. For the past few weeks we have been trying to find someone to be able take Big Dog and cremate him, to no avail. The only thing we could find was once a week someone picks up dead bodies to take to Guadalajara for cremation but only once a month per month per vet. And someone told us that once they get to Guadalajara good luck on getting your dog back! The vet that came today told us that two weeks ago they started a crematorium and last week they tried a big dog and it worked great, so that is where Big Dog is going and now we know that it will be him in the urn. Did Big Dog wait until that was in place before he started to shut down? He was doing not too bad up until 3 days ago.

Well, here’s to you Big Dog!
We love you Mum and Dad in Paradise
